Fineline Windows - Listed Building Extension, Rutland

The Fineline windows have been installed at our contemporary extension project in Rutland. The existing building is grade ll listed and required Alex McIntyre Architect's extensive experience in working with conservation architecture to be able to achieve planning permission with such a contemporary design.

The existing house is grade ll listed and dates back to the 19th century, built using stone and a locally sourced Collyweston slate roof. Our clients wanted an extension to the Kitchen that would be bright and contemporary in contrast to the rest of the traditional house. We designed an extension that would use traditional materials to blend into the existing building, with large contemporary glazing to achieve this.

We used Fineline windows that have an extremely slim aluminium frame and structural glass to achieve large uninterpreted spans of glazing to maximize natural light.

The gable of the extension is supported from the existing building and a single steel column to reduce the amount of structure that would block natural light.

The Fineline windows and structure run directly into the stone walls of the existing building, which is left exposed internally to express the character of the building.
